About the Show
Carried Away:
Pipe Dreams and Fiddle Fables
I've been carried away by music and stories all my life: from the first wild tales my grandfather told me, to the dream-faceted gems contained in old ballads….from the resonant power of a trance dance melody coaxed from a middle eastern bagpipe, to the siren sigh of horsehair bow across an eager fiddle string.
I experience stories and music as the links between the inner and outer realms—and as the bones, blood and sinew of the imagination. They are truer than truth because they give our experience of the world its structure and form. Imagination is the home territory of the human spirit. Its body is story; its blood is music.
We live and dream and create through story. And for me the proper soundtrack consists of raw, rooted tunes played on old wooden instruments.
Carried Away….
is an evening of story and music from a gifted purveyor of both. It is tales that are true, re-imagined, and retold from deep roots, with music played on fiddles and bagpipes from many lands.

The World Beat Festival Story
One February evening in 1997, two moms with young daughters set out to form a positive response to incidents of racism and intolerance in Salem, Oregon. On rolls of poster paper stretched across a dining room wall, they mapped out a celebration of cultural diversity. The World Beat Festival, celebrating its 15th anniversary this June 30-July 1 is a true story of community action. The Salem Multicultural Institute, the nonprofit that they formed to operate the festival, has since flourished. It operates programs all year long with a small staff and more than 400 volunteers. (see more here)
Starting at 12:00 noon, the afternoon portion of the festival will feature musicians, singers, vendors, and a wide variety of workshops. Enjoy the performers and vendors at no charge. Fee for workshops: $10 for as many as you want!
At 5:00, we’ll have an Irish session. Bring your instrument, and play Irish and other Celtic music with the others at the session. All acoustic musicians are welcome. Oregon Coast Culinary Institute will prepare an all-you-can-eat dinner featuring Celtic-themed foods from 5:00 to 6:30 for $6.95 served on-site.
Starting at 7:00 pm, the evening concert will open with the Oregon Coast Pipe and Drum Band. Local band Hungry Mountain will entertain with songs, ballads and toe-tapping jigs and reels. Our concert headliner is The Family Carr, featuring Kevin Carr, fiddler, piper and storyteller. The Family Carr plays contemporary/traditional music with drive. Kevin Carr and Josie Mendelsohn and their offspring Daniel and Molly Carr have a trunkful of tunes and songs collected over the years in dance halls, festivals and along the byways of America, Europe and Quebec. The play with verve and passion and with a rare harmonic and melodic inventiveness that still pays deep respect to the sources of these timeless musical treasures. A Family Carr concert might include Galician foliadas, muiñeiras and xotas, old time Appalachian fiddle breakdowns and southern ballads, Irish pipe tunes, Quebecois reels and gigues, spoons duets, as well as newly composed traditional tunes which are both in the style and in the groove. Admission for the evening concert is $15. Tickets are available now at Off the Record 2227B Newmark North Bend and at Books by the Bay 1875 Sherman in North Bend or by calling 541.756.4701.

Every December, California Revels produces, “The Christmas Revels,” a joyous production welcoming the return of the light back from the darkness of winter. Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, California Revels late Founder, claimed that many people celebrate the Solstice without realizing it. Decorating homes with lights for midwinter, for example, is an ancient ritual for “calling back the light” that predates Christmas by centuries. “The Winter Solstice falls on the shortest day and brings on the longest night of the year. Across the centuries, people have chosen this time to acknowledge and celebrate the cycle of light and darkness, good and evil, life and death, that governs all our lives.”
THIS YEAR THE THEME IS IRELAND IN 1905 - WITH BRITISH TRADITIONS WELL REPRESENTED TOO.
